Healthy Hair 101

Ahh healthy hair. Here are some (super simplified) tips for stimulating hair growth and maintaining healthy locks:

  • Water, water, water. All day, every day! I start out each day with a liter of water on an empty stomach. Then I wait about 20-30 minutes before eating breakfast. I make sure to drink another couple liters between meals throughout the day/evening. Drink at least half your body weight in oz. of pure water per day.

  • Vitamin C (from fruits & veggies, not pills)! Vitamin C is a catalyst for Collagen production throughout the entire body, including skin and hair. Stock up on plenty of citrus fruits, dark, leafy greens, berries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, and papayas!

  • Get your healthy fat on. Fill your plate daily with foods like avocados, chia seeds, dark cacao chocolate, all kinds of nuts and seeds, experiment with high quality EPA-DHA supplements from algae, and cook with coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil.

  • Limit as much as you possibly can (or completely omit)- processed sugars, "diet" or "low calorie" foods and drinks, wheat (not just gluten...wheat!), dairy, caffeine, excess alcohol, and conventional meats.

  • Experiment with non-toxic and gentle hair care products. Innersense Organic Beauty is my absolute forever favorite!!! I use and LOVE their Hydrating Hairbath, Hydrating Cream Conditioner, Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner , and on occasion; their styling products. Also, try washing your hair less often and using dry shampoo in between washes. Here is a super simple homemade dry shampoo recipe- 🏼For blondes: Organic Arrowroot powder or Organic Cornstarch (OR half/half of both combined) plus a few drops of your favorite essential oil/s (optional). 🏽For brunettes- Above recipe + Cacao powder to color. For red-heads- Top recipe + Cinnamon to color. (Apply sparingly to roots with hands or an old powder brush, massage scalp and comb through. Or apply to your comb/brush & brush through hair. Repeat until desired coverage. Make sure to get the roots of each layer of hair!) If your hair is in need of a little extra moisture (especially on the ends) or heat protection, give Prim Botanicals The Hair Oil a try. It is also awesome to use as deep reparative hair masks/ hot oils treatments.

  • Use less heat on your hair. Stress your tresses less! Check out Hubalou Hair Wrap Towels for a more gentle (and less frizzy) way to dry your hair. They're amazing! I've noticed much less breakage on my ends, and because of their wrap towels- I have been able to cut down on my hair's daily heat exposure Also, try going for more loose hair styles, and ditch tight (root tugging) up-dos and looks.

  • Incorporate more fruits, veggies, greens, beans, legumes and sprouts into your daily diet. Try new things like juices, smoothies, veggie dishes, fruit-based NICE-cream, etc. Some of my favorite superfood supplements I enjoy taking daily in smoothies are: Hawaiian Spirulina, Moringa Leaf Powder, Wheatgrass Juice Powder, Peruvian Maca Powder, Raw Shelled Hempseed, and Goji Powder. All of these incredible superfoods are available on Thrive Market, for wholesale prices and free shipping on $49 or more.

Happy hair growing!
